A food intolerance is a digestive issue where the body has difficulty digesting certain foods, leading to uncomfortable symptoms like bloating, gas, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. It is different from a food allergy because it does not involve the immune system and does not cause a severe, life-threatening reaction like anaphylaxis. Symptoms typically appear a few hours after eating, and the severity can depend on the amount of the food consumed.
Causes
Enzyme deficiency: Not having enough of an enzyme to break down a specific food component, such as a lack of the lactase enzyme in people with lactose intolerance.
Digestive system sensitivity: The gut may be extra sensitive to certain foods, like certain types of sugar or carbohydrates (e.g., fructose or fructans).
Sensitivity to food additives: Reactions to naturally occurring chemicals, colourings, or preservatives in food

The most common food allergies in the UK include:
Celery
Gluten ( wheat, rye, barley, and oats)
Crustaceans ( Such as prawns, crabs, and lobsters.)
Fish
Eggs
Lupin
Milk
Molluscs ( Such as mussels & oysters)
Mustard
Peanuts
Sesame
Soybeans
Sulphur dioxide
Sulphites

A true food allergy affects the immune system. Even small amounts of the offending food can trigger a range of symptoms, which can be severe or life-threatening.
In contrast, a food intolerance often affects only the digestive system and causes less serious symptoms.

Food intolerances affect your digestive system.
People who suffer from an intolerance, or sensitivity, can't break down certain foods.
They develop gas, diarrhea and other problems
An intolerance or food sensitivity is inconvenient but not life-threatening.

You may need to change your diet to limit or eliminate problem foods. Many people with food intolerances find that consuming small amounts of food causes few symptoms if any.
